Assistant Director of Tennis

Longwood University invites candidates to apply for Assistant Director of Tennis within the Department of Athletics. This position will assist in the instruction, scouting, recruiting, and/or coaching of student-athletes in the fundamentals of tennis by demonstrating techniques and methods for success during college competition; inform student-athletes of the University and NCAA rules and regulations; evaluating student-athlete’s strengths and weaknesses to improve techniques in order to be successful on and off the court.


  • Assist the Director of Tennis in planning all activities associated with practice and competition for men’s and women’s tennis
  • Coordinate team travel arrangements to include transportation, lodging, meals, etc.
  • Recruits qualified student-athletes effectively to Longwood under the direction of the Director of Tennis by building and cultivating strong relationships with prospective student-athletes, families and junior coaches
  • Monitors the academic progress of student athletes and assist in ensuring academic success
  • Achieves competitive results that demonstrate athletic excellence
  • Fiscal responsibility – ensure the Tennis Program, as a member of its staff, executes the professional duties in a fiscally responsible manner in compliance with NCAA, Longwood University and the Department of Athletics policies and procedures
  • Rules compliance – manage the Tennis Program in full compliance with NCAA rules and regulations, Big South Conference rules and regulations, Longwood University and the Department of Athletics policies and procedures
  • Community and university involvement – perform public relation functions promoting Longwood athletes in a positive manner to the media, alumni and community and work collaboratively with University Advancement to cultivate and promote donor relations to ensure the fund raising efforts are successful
  • Contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with all members of the Department
  • May also participate in sports camps and clinics with approval


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of training and work experience
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Experience playing tennis as a NCAA Division I student-athlete is preferred
  • Work experience coaching tennis at a NCAA Division I University is preferred
  • Demonstrated skill in teaching, coaching and mentoring others
  • Demonstrated ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms, legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to meet the university eligibility requirements to drive fleet vehicles, including passenger vans and/or mini-buses
  • Valid Driver’s License

Salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience.
