NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (Nov. 10) – North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila and Yuya Ito of Texas won singles titles Sunday during the final day of the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at Newport Beach Tennis Club in Newport Beach, Calif.
The eighth-seeded Daavettila defeated No. 6 seed Anna Turati of Texas, 7-6 (5), 6-1 to capture the women’s championship while Ito outlasted unseeded Damon Kesaris of Saint Mary’s, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to claim the men’s title.
Daavettila is the second North Carolina player to win the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, joining Jamie Loeb, who claimed the title in 2013.
For Ito, it was his second ITA title of the fall and within the span of a month. He captured the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa on Oct. 13, and with his victory on Sunday, became the first Longhorn to win the ITA National Fall Championships singles title.
In doubles action, UCLA’s Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart teamed to post a two-set victory over the No. 1 seeded North Carolina State duo of Anna Rogers and Alana Smith, 6-4, 6-3 to win the women’s title. Second seed Dominik Kellovsky and Matej Vocel of Oklahoma State won the men’s crown following a 6-4, 1-6, 10-4 victory over No. 8 seed Robert Cash and John McNally of Ohio State.
Bolton and Hart are the third Bruins doubles team to capture the Fall Championships title, joining Keri Phebus and Susie Starrett (1995) and Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips (2014). Kellovsky and Vocel join Martin Dvoracek and Pavel Kudmac as Cowboys duos to win the ITA Fall Championships doubles titles.
Consolation singles finals were also played with Saint Mary’s Mariia Kozyreva defeating Georgia’s Vivian Wolff, 6-4, 7-6 (7) to win the women’s single title. Garbiel Decamps of UCF won the men’s singles consolation final with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over South Carolina’s Raphael Lambling,
Wolff returned to action later in the day and teamed with Eleni Christofi to win the women’s doubles consolation final, defeating Yale’s top-seeded team of Jessie Gong and Samantha Martinelli, 6-1, 2-6, 10-8. In the men’s doubles consolation final, Michigan’s Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar were victorious, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Iowa’s Will Davies and Oliver Okonkwo.
The Oracle ITA National Fall Championships marks the final collegiate tournament of the fall. The next event on the schedule is the ITA Kickoff Weekend slated for Jan. 24-27, 2020 at 30 campus sites.
