Top Seeds Advance During Day One of Oracle ITA Masters

MALIBU, Calif. – The top eight men seeds and top 11 women’s seeds advanced during the first round of the 2019 Oracle ITA Masters main draw that opened Thursday at the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine University in Malibu.

Cleveland State’s Nico Mostardi, seeded No. 22 in the tournament, defeated No. 11 Sven Lah of Baylor, 7-5, 7-5, while top-seeded Keggan Smith (UCLA) posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over No. 32 seed Alexis Collard (Alabama State), 6-2, 6-2.

After dropping the opening set, No. 21 Alisa Soloveva (Winthrop) rallied back for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 12 Asuka Kawai (Illinois) in women’s play. University of Virginia and No. 1 seed Natasha Shubhash recorded a straight-set victory over No. 32 Alexa Quintanilla, 6-0, 6-1.

In mixed doubles play, the top eight seeds advanced to the quarterfinals.

The second day of the Oracle ITA Masters continues Friday with mixed doubles quarterfinals play beginning at 10 a.m. Men’s and women’s singles main draw and consolation draw are also scheduled for the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine.
